Overseas Health
Cover explained

Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) is a type of health insurance designed to help international visitors meet the cost of any medical or hospital care that they may need while in Australia. Many international visitors are not covered under the Australian public health system, Medicare, unless their home country has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia.

OVHC allows you to be treated in a hospital as a private patient for services that are included on your policy. It also gives you the freedom to choose your preferred doctor. Additionally, OVHC covers the cost of emergency ambulance transport by air, land, or sea. Depending on your cover, it may also help to meet the cost of doctors’ visits for non-hospital services.

Regardless of whether it’s a condition of your visa, it’s strongly recommended that you are protected for any unplanned accidents or illnesses while you’re in Australia. Paying for the full cost of treatment can be very expensive.

By choosing AIA Health, you can feel confident that you have fully compliant cover. All our OVHC products meet the health insurance requirements set out by the Department of Home Affairs under Condition 8501 under visa subclasses 188, 400, 403, 407, 408, 417, 462, 476, 482, 485, or 489.

We’ll also provide the required evidence of adequate health insurance for your visa application either directly to you or to your nominated agent or lawyer at your request. Our fast response times mean that you can get your process started as soon as possible.

You can start using your cover as soon as you're in Australia, however waiting periods may apply before you can access certain benefits under your OVHC policy. Once you have served any applicable waiting periods, you can also start claiming on those benefits. All health funds in Australia have waiting periods and they apply to all members, including Australian citizens that take out private health insurance. Most insurers will recognise waiting periods already served for equivalent services with a previous Australian health insurer if you switch to another provider e.g., switching to AIA Health.

Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) and travel insurance cover different types of medical expenses while you're in Australia.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is designed to cover unexpected events such as trip cancellation, baggage and valuables, emergency medical expenses, patient transport, and general medical assistance. It may also provide coverage for accidents or injuries that occur during your trip. However, it generally doesn’t cover ongoing medical expenses or pre-existing medical conditions.

Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC)

OVHC is specifically designed for international visitors and workers who are planning to stay for an extended time in Australia. It provides cover for both unexpected medical expenses and ongoing medical care for pre-existing conditions, including cover for ambulance services, prescription medication, and hospital treatment. OVHC may also cover the cost of medical evacuation to your home country if medically necessary.

Benefits of OVHC vs travel Insurance

OVHC provides more protection for medical expenses while you're in Australia, as it covers things like ambulance services, prescription medication, hospital treatment, and ongoing medical care for pre-existing conditions, which travel insurance typically doesn’t cover. OVHC is a better option for visitors who are planning to stay in Australia for an extended time and want to ensure that they have adequate cover for their healthcare needs.
